When it comes to entertaining, cheese platters are probably the most easy and efficient way to impress your guests. The best part is, setting them up is so easy that you can do it practically anywhere from your dorm room to your house. They’re certainly a few steps above tortillas and salsa served straight from the bag and jar. Next time you’re hosting a girls night, take the plunge and go for a cheese platter. Here’s what you’ll need to assemble them.

Start by finding a tray that you can use to assemble the platter on. Trays really come in handy for multiple things around the house so it’s great to have a few lying around at all times. If you don’t have a tray you can easily find a great one for under $20 at stores like Home Goods and TJ Maxx. Make sure to browse their selections because you’re bound to find something that you’ll love!

Once you’ve got your tray it’s time to assemble the food. The best part about a cheese platter is that you don’t have to cook anything! Most platters consist of a few different types of cheeses, grapes, bread, and crackers. For a basic platter try to have at least three – four different varieties of cheese. Try to break them down into further categories like hard and soft cheeses and try to choose varieties that most people like. For soft choices brie and camembert are great choices. For hard choices go with crowd pleasers like cheddar (soft or sharp) and pepper jack.

For bread, the obvious contender would be a French baguette. Baguette goes well with almost any variety of cheese and almost everyone loves the soft texture of this bread. For crackers try a few different varieties and make sure to skip the saltines. Try not to choose crackers that are too overpowering in flavor. They should be there to complement the cheese, not overtake it.

For the final touches add your grapes. You can also add nuts like walnuts and almonds and a few sprigs of herbs for the perfect garnish. Arrange everything neatly and organically on your platter. You don’t want it to look too perfect. There should be a rustic element to the way things are laid out. Your guests are going to crazy when they see the cheese platter you’ve arranged. Not only will it take you minimal effort, you’ll enjoy the taste of everything you’ve put out and you’re bound to get tons of compliments. Next time you entertain, be sure to give it a try.
